The European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Iran reveals that IranAir has been using its planes to transport military equipment to war zones like Syria, Yemen, and Russia. The chair, Hannah Neumann, highlights the need for engagement with both the Iranian parliament and people seeking change and peace. Neumann criticizes Josep Borrell’s policies on Iran, particularly his conservative stance towards the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). She advocates for the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, citing Lithuania’s parliament who has already taken this step.

Neumann emphasizes the necessity of listing the IRGC as a terrorist organization, given their actions both within Iran and in the Middle East. She expresses hope that Borrell’s successor, Kaja Kallas, will prioritize this issue. Neumann also comments on the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as the new president of Iran, urging Europe to closely monitor his actions and maintain a strong stance against the IRGC. She condemns the execution of an Iranian-German citizen and calls for consistent action against Iran’s human rights violations.

The cases of Iranian journalists Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi are highlighted, with Neumann condemning their imprisonment as an attempt to stifle freedom of the press. She calls on the EU to raise awareness about their plight and support independent voices in Iran. Neumann also criticizes Iran’s bill on veils, viewing it as a regressive step that further restricts women’s rights and autonomy. She condemns the hijab law as a means of control and oppression by the regime.

In light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and Israel, Neumann stresses the importance of promoting peace in the region. She condemns the violence and advocates for peaceful solutions, including humanitarian aid for those affected by conflict. Neumann explains the European boycott of IranAir, citing evidence obtained by EU secret services that the airline has been transporting military equipment to conflict zones. The sanctions aim to prevent IranAir from acquiring spare parts and new planes for military purposes.

Despite the inconvenience caused to some Iranian citizens who rely on IranAir for travel, Neumann underscores the importance of collective action against the Iranian regime to prevent further human rights violations. She urges cooperation to address the repression and violence perpetuated by the regime, emphasizing the need for a united front against such actions.
