Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been excluded from the preliminary deal to allocate the bloc’s top jobs following the recent EU elections, causing uproar within the Italian government. The agreement was brokered without Italy’s involvement, leading Meloni to consider formally abstaining from the decision-making process. She criticized the selection method where a few individuals decided on the top positions without considering the results of the election and popular sovereignty.

Meloni expressed her disappointment with the EU’s decision-making process, highlighting that important positions were determined through bilateral talks rather than open discussions. She emphasized the importance of respecting the message delivered by citizens at the ballot box, calling for a change in the EU’s policies that have been dictated by larger European nations. This exclusion has left Italy isolated within the European Council and prompted Meloni to consider abstaining from the final decision on the EU top jobs, potentially causing political fragmentation.

In response to the exclusion, Meloni is demanding that Italy receive a Commission vice-presidency and a relevant portfolio in exchange for their support for the top jobs package. However, she emphasized that Italy is rightfully entitled to these roles and will not settle for anything less. Meloni’s stance has raised concerns about the potential impact of Italy’s abstention on the EU decision-making process and the future relationships within the European Council. Despite the pressure to align with the other EU member states, Meloni is standing firm on her demands.

The exclusion of Italy from the talks has further strained the relationship between Italy and the European Union, with Meloni condemning the lack of consensus and transparency in the selection process for top EU positions. Meloni’s defiance and refusal to conform to the decisions made without Italian participation have put her at odds with other EU leaders. As Italy considers its response to this exclusion, the political landscape within the European Council is likely to face challenges and uncertainties in the upcoming discussions and negotiations.

Although Meloni faces pressure to support the EU’s top jobs package in exchange for key roles for Italy, she remains steadfast in her demand for fair treatment and representation. The ongoing negotiations and discussions within the European Council will determine the future dynamics and alliances within the EU, with Italy’s position serving as a critical factor in the decision-making process. Meloni’s decision to potentially abstain from the final decision on the EU top jobs reflects her commitment to upholding Italy’s interests and sovereignty in the face of exclusion and marginalization within the European Union.
