The UAE may soon introduce a unique school curriculum that focuses on nature-based education, thanks to the efforts of Syrian expat Sherin Bodekji Wanes. With her company Natura Tribe, Sherin aims to bring nature-inspired activities to schools across the UAE. Her vision includes caring for bees, harvesting honey, raising chickens, cooking outdoors, and more to help children develop a deep love and respect for nature. Sherin’s journey into environmental education began during the pandemic when she lost her corporate job and decided to focus on her children’s connection to nature.

Sherin’s background in business administration and strategic marketing, along with specialized certifications such as Forest School Leader and beekeeper, have empowered her to create unique nature-based programs. She offers a wide range of activities for children and adults, including playdates, camps, night safaris, and therapeutic forest sessions. Sherin’s commitment to nature education extends beyond her community, as she has launched the first International Forest School Leader Training Programme in the Middle East and organizes the Nature Fair in Al Barari.

Through Natura Tribe, Sherin hopes to inspire the younger generation to become the Keepers of Mother Nature by teaching them essential survival skills, mindfulness, and a deep appreciation for the environment. She believes that exposure to nature at a young age can have endless benefits for children, including increased confidence, better communication skills, and a stronger connection to the natural world. Sherin envisions creating nature spaces for children across the UAE and incorporating nature-based learning into school curricula to make Dubai a hub for nature activities and education.

Sherin’s passion for nature education comes from her own childhood experiences in Syria and her travels to 56 countries, where she has learned best practices to incorporate into her programs. She is grateful for the support and flexibility in the UAE that has allowed her to realize her dream of connecting children to nature. Through her work, Sherin hopes to change attitudes towards nature and cultivate a generation of nature lovers who understand the importance of respecting and loving the environment.
