As summer approaches, one fruit takes center stage and steals the spotlight – the mango. In the UAE, the Japanese Miyazaki mango is celebrated for its exquisite flavor and high price. While this delicacy may not be found on supermarket shelves, you can still indulge in its creamy texture, fragrant flavor, and juicy flesh by placing an advance order at select retail stores or purchasing it from certain e-commerce platforms, albeit at a hefty price tag. Two Miyazaki mangoes weighing 800 grams are priced at Dh620 and are often referred to as the “egg of the sun” due to their bright golden color.

Although the Miyazaki mango reigns supreme, Alphonso, Sindhri, Kesari, and other popular mango varieties are still crowd favorites in the UAE. Dubai and Sharjah fruit markets are bustling with activity as mango season arrives and residents eagerly await the arrival of fresh stock. Vendors at these markets report maintaining limited stocks of mangoes, with some selling over 300 boxes daily and offering select varieties in smaller quantities. The large, authentic Alphonso mangoes from India, for example, are always in high demand and priced at approximately Dh20 per kilogram.

In terms of pricing, Alphonso mangoes start at Dh7 per kilogram in the Al Awir market, while supermarkets may charge as high as Dh20 per kilogram. Indian Kesari mangoes are priced at Dh7 per kilogram in local markets and Dh10 per kilogram in supermarkets. Pakistani mangoes, such as Sindhri and Anwar Ratol varieties, are notably cheaper this season, with prices ranging from Dh20 to Dh35 for a 5 to 6-kilogram box. Additionally, mango varieties from Peru, Brazil, and Kenya are now available in the market at various price points.

While mangoes may be slightly more expensive this year, vendors anticipate a slight price decrease in the coming months. Factors such as increased costs from distributors, shipping, and storage have contributed to the rise in mango prices. However, with the anticipation of a downward trend in prices, mango enthusiasts can look forward to enjoying their favorite fruit without breaking the bank. Overall, whether you opt for the exclusive Miyazaki mango or stick to the more traditional varieties, mango season in the UAE promises a delightful and flavorful experience for all mango lovers.
