A significant earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Friday, January 2, 2026, causing widespread alarm and interrupting official proceedings. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, was felt strongly in major cities including Mexico City and Acapulco, and triggered landslides in the state of Guerrero. Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage following the seismic event.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the town of San Marcos in Guerrero, a region close to the Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco, according to the National Seismological Agency. Residents and tourists evacuated buildings as alarms sounded, and reports indicate disruption to communications in some areas. President Claudia Sheinbaum was addressing the press when the quake hit, but was able to resume her briefing shortly after.

Initial Impact of the Mexico Earthquake

The US Geological Survey (USGS) placed the earthquake at a depth of 35 kilometers (approximately 22 miles), northwest of Rancho Viejo in the mountains, roughly 91 kilometers (57 miles) northeast of Acapulco. The depth suggests a moderate potential for widespread damage, although the magnitude itself is not considered exceptionally high.

Guerrero’s civil defense agency reported isolated landslides along roads surrounding Acapulco and in other parts of the state. These landslides could potentially hamper rescue and relief efforts. However, preliminary assessments from Governor Evelyn Salgado suggest no widespread, critical infrastructure damage has occurred across the state.

Experiences on the Ground

Witnesses in Acapulco described a strong rumbling and barking dogs preceding the shaking. José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a local doctor and human rights advocate, recounted hearing a loud noise before feeling intense tremors. He stated the shaking wasn’t as severe as some past earthquakes but still prompted preparation for possible aftershocks.

Communication networks faced disruptions, particularly in the Costa Chica region southeast of Acapulco, hindering initial damage reports. This lack of immediate information makes a comprehensive assessment challenging. Authorities are working to restore connectivity to better understand the impact in these remote areas.

Mexico’s History with Seismic Activity

Mexico is situated in a highly seismically active zone, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. The country frequently experiences earthquakes due to the interaction of several tectonic plates, including the North American, Cocos, and Pacific plates. This geographical reality necessitates robust building codes and emergency preparedness plans.

The region has a particularly tragic history with significant earthquakes. The 1985 Mexico City earthquake, which caused widespread devastation and loss of life, prompted major revisions to building regulations. More recently, a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico in 2017, also resulting in substantial damage and fatalities. The USGS provides comprehensive information about earthquake hazards.

The potential for tsunamis, though currently considered low given the quake’s characteristics and location, is always evaluated following offshore seismic events of this magnitude. Monitoring systems are in place to detect any unusual wave activity.

Aftershocks and Ongoing Assessment

As of Friday evening, numerous aftershocks have been reported, ranging in intensity from barely perceptible to moderately strong. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for further tremors. The National Seismological Agency continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates.

The focus now shifts to detailed damage assessments, particularly in the affected areas of Guerrero. Teams are being dispatched to evaluate structural integrity of buildings, assess the extent of landslides, and provide assistance to any communities in need. This has prompted increased awareness of disaster readiness throughout the region.

Authorities are urging residents to check on neighbors and report any damage to local emergency services. Updates on the situation will be provided as they become available. It is anticipated that a clearer picture of the earthquake’s overall impact will emerge in the coming days. Stay informed through official channels and be prepared for potential aftershocks.
