The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn) collaborated with Al Tamimi and Company to host a seminar titled ‘Digital Horizons: Exploring the Future of Data, Telecoms and Technology’ at Knowledge Oasis Muscat. The event covered important topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance, risks, legal impacts, and the role of AI-driven predictive analytics in improving healthcare outcomes in Oman. Saif Al Riyami, Business Development Director at Knowledge Oasis Muscat, emphasized the significance of addressing key aspects related to AI and leveraging partnerships for technological advancements.

David Yates from Al Tamimi and Company discussed AI from a legal perspective at the seminar. He highlighted the operations of ChatGPT, challenges in developing generative AI systems, legal and ethical risks, regional and global approaches to AI governance, and legal considerations for AI implementation in Oman. Yates stressed the need for human oversight in AI systems, as they lack true human intelligence and can pose risks such as misinformation, privacy concerns, and intellectual property infringement.

Yates also mentioned the opportunities for AI applications in Oman, especially in sectors like healthcare, public services, energy, and agriculture. He referenced His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s support for SMEs involved in innovation and advanced technologies, as well as the National Programme for AI and Advanced Technologies launched in 2020 to drive AI capacity-building and adoption. AI is viewed as a key enabler for enhancing productivity and innovation across various economic sectors in Oman.

Haider Al Lawati from Oman Data Park highlighted the importance of having a well-crafted AI strategy to align initiatives with business goals, drive innovation, and ensure responsible AI application. Moosa Al Hadhrami from Eknan Technologies discussed data sharing precautions, data vulnerability, and showcased encryption devices designed to protect data privacy. BasslKoukash of BClear Aligner presented on ‘AI-Driven Predictive Analytics for Enhancing Patient Outcomes in Oman’s Healthcare System’, demonstrating how AI can be used to prevent and manage diseases like diabetes and develop personalized preventive care plans for dental issues in Oman.

AI is expected to contribute significantly to the global economy by 2030 and having a strategy in place is essential for businesses to reap its benefits. The adoption of AI in healthcare in Oman can lead to improved patient outcomes through predictive analytics and early intervention strategies. Challenges such as data quality, system integration, and patient privacy must be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of AI-driven solutions in the healthcare sector. With the support of government initiatives and strategic partnerships, Oman is poised to harness the potential of AI for economic diversification, innovation, and productivity enhancement across various sectors.
