French President Emmanuel Macron is facing challenges from the far-right National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, as they gained traction in the recent European parliamentary vote. In response, Macron announced a snap legislative election set for June and July and called on moderates from all sides to unite against extremism. He dismissed rumors of resignation if the National Rally wins, emphasizing his confidence in the French people to make the right choice in the upcoming election. Macron acknowledged the rise of the far-right not only in France but across Europe, prompting him to take action to avoid a potential 2027 far-right victory.

Macron’s decision to call for an early election was influenced by the changing political landscape in France and Europe. He admitted his previous shortcomings in addressing the issues faced by the citizens, leading to the rise of far-right ideologies. Macron highlighted the importance of setting a course and vision for the country without his vocal presence in the upcoming legislative elections. The uncertainty of potential alliances and the two-round voting system in France make the outcome of the election unpredictable.

In response to the National Rally’s efforts to strengthen their position post-European elections, Macron criticized the decision of Eric Ciotti, a leader of the moderate conservative party Les Républicains, to form an alliance with Le Pen. Ciotti’s move triggered an internal crisis within the party, with Macron condemning the pact as a “deal with the devil.” The situation led to the closure of Les Républicains party’s Paris headquarters and the expected dismissal of Ciotti as party president following an emergency meeting of its leadership.

Macron’s strategy focuses on preventing the far-right from gaining power in the upcoming legislative election by uniting moderates against extremism. The president urged politicians and voters to come together to build a joint project that rejects the extremes. While Macron remains confident in the future of France, he acknowledges the challenges posed by the rise of far-right ideologies and the need for a united front to address these issues effectively. The outcome of the election remains uncertain, with potential alliances and voter preferences playing a significant role in determining the future political landscape of France.
