The World Health Organisation (WHO) is set to host an emergency meeting to address fair global access to tests, treatments, and vaccines for mpox, as the viral infection spreads in parts of Africa and beyond. This meeting will be attended by members of a health experts alliance, including global health agencies such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Ayoade Alakija, the chair of the meeting and a WHO special envoy, emphasized the importance of preventing past failures and ensuring equal access to medical treatments during pandemics, like the one experienced with Covid-19.

The declaration of a global health emergency for mpox came after a significant outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo spread to nearby countries, with Sweden reporting its first case outside of Africa linked to the outbreak. Alakija acknowledged the failures in product access during the Covid pandemic but expressed a commitment to learn from those lessons and prioritize equity and equal access during the response to the mpox outbreak. The meeting aims to address the challenges faced in ensuring fair global access to essential healthcare resources during pandemics and prevent any repeat of past shortcomings.

The issue of fair global access to tests, treatments, and vaccines for mpox is critical as the viral infection continues to spread in Africa and beyond. The alliance of health experts, including international organizations and foundations, will work together to discuss and develop strategies to prevent inequalities and ensure that everyone has access to necessary medical resources. The WHO’s declaration of a global health emergency underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for collaborative efforts to address the mpox outbreak effectively.

Lessons learned from past failures in ensuring equal access to medical treatments during the Covid-19 pandemic will be crucial in guiding the response to the mpox outbreak. Alakija’s commitment to prioritizing equity and equal access to healthcare resources demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by the viral infection. By learning from past mistakes and focusing on fairness and equity in global health responses, the meeting attendees aim to prevent any repeat of the product access failures experienced during the Covid pandemic.

The global health emergency declaration for mpox highlights the severity of the situation and the need for immediate action to prevent further spread of the viral infection. The meeting, which brings together key stakeholders in global health, will play a crucial role in developing strategies to ensure fair global access to essential healthcare resources. By addressing past failures and prioritizing equity and equal access, the attendees aim to strengthen the global health response to the mpox outbreak and prevent any inequalities in accessing tests, treatments, and vaccines.

In conclusion, the emergency meeting hosted by the WHO to discuss fair global access to tests, treatments, and vaccines for mpox is a critical step in addressing the challenges posed by the viral infection. By learning from past failures and prioritizing equity and equal access to healthcare resources, the attendees aim to prevent any repeat of the product access failures experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. The global health emergency declaration underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for collaborative efforts to prevent further spread of mpox and ensure that everyone has access to necessary medical resources.
