A 58-year-old Filipina expatriate named Maria underwent a successful one-hour micro-invasive surgery to remove a massive tumour that was larger than her eyeball from behind her right eye. The surgery, which took place at Medcare Hospital Sharjah, prevented Maria from going blind and improved her vision significantly. Prior to the surgery, Maria had experienced vision loss and discomfort in her right eye, which had progressively worsened over time.

The tumour, identified as a cavernous hemangioma, was compressing the optic nerve, posing a threat to Maria’s sight. This benign vascular tumour is known to grow slowly but can cause vision loss or blindness when located near critical areas like the optic nerve. The surgical team, led by Dr Fairooz P.M., successfully removed the 35×30 mm tumour, relieving the pressure on Maria’s optic nerve and restoring her vision.

Maria had been experiencing eye discomfort and vision issues for years before finally seeking medical help. The tumour had caused her eye to protrude forward and squeeze the nerve at the back of the eye, affecting her ability to see clearly. Following the successful surgery, Maria was relieved to know that the tumour would not grow back. However, due to her age, Dr Fairooz recommended cataract surgery to address any vision issues associated with aging.

According to John Hopkins Medical Journal, cavernous malformations like the one Maria had cannot be prevented. Researchers are studying the genes linked to these growths in the hope of developing preventive measures. Dr Fairooz stressed the importance of early and precise intervention in cases of orbital tumours to prevent serious complications, such as vision loss. The multidisciplinary approach taken by the medical staff at Medcare Hospital Sharjah was instrumental in the success of Maria’s complex surgery.

Maria expressed her gratitude for the improved eyesight after the surgery, noting that she could continue working and watch her grandchildren grow up. The successful outcome of this case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment of orbital tumours to preserve vision and prevent long-term complications. Dr Fairooz’s expertise and the collaborative effort of the medical team at Medcare Hospital Sharjah ensured a positive outcome for Maria’s surgery and recovery.
