In the world of sports, the saying ‘mind over matter’ holds a significant meaning, highlighting how athletes often surpass physical limitations through mental strength. Athletes demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and dedication to push beyond perceived boundaries, turning setbacks into opportunities for growth. One such athlete is Hamda Alshkeili, a UAE Jiu-Jitsu National Team member born with a hearing impairment. Despite her physical challenges, she excels in Jiu-Jitsu, recently winning a gold medal at the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship in Bangkok in 2023.

Hamda is now preparing to defend her title at the upcoming Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi from May 3-8. The event will feature the debut of the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Youth Championship for athletes under 21, 18, and 16 years old. As a pivotal event for the UAE National Team, Hamda and her teammates aim for their fourth consecutive victory, with Hamda ranking globally at #59 in the Women’s Professional Purple AJP Tour 2023-2024.

With over 1,500 competitors expected to participate from various Asian countries, including youth athletes from 25 nations, the Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship promises to be a thrilling event. Despite feeling pressure, Hamda is fully prepared, supported by her team, federation, and technical staff. Her track record includes impressive wins at the Thailand Open Grand Prix 2023, Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship.

Facing unique challenges due to her hearing impairment, Hamda navigates through communication difficulties during training and competitions. She relies on her coach and teammates’ support and enhances physical communication with opponents. Despite the hurdles, Hamda remains resilient, drawing strength from her team and aiming to inspire others in the sport. Her ultimate goal is to achieve a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and become a coach for individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusivity and growth in the sport.

Hamda’s journey showcases the power of determination, passion, and a strong mindset in achieving success in sports. By defying expectations and breaking barriers, she continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams with dedication and perseverance. Her story serves as a reminder that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible in the world of sports.
