Workers in air-conditioned offices can also be vulnerable to heat-related health issues, according to experts. While physical effects of heat exposure are well-known, the impact on mental health is often overlooked. Extreme heat can lead to mental health issues such as irritability, depression symptoms, and aggression. Additionally, memory problems, reduced attention, and slower reaction times have been linked to elevated temperatures. Research shows a 40% likelihood of hospitalization for mood disorders like depression and mania during periods of extreme heat.

The connection between high temperatures and mental health involves a complex interplay of biological and psychological responses. Heat stress can lead to psychological distress, worsened by disrupted sleep patterns and hormonal imbalances. Heat stress occurs when the body absorbs more heat than it can disperse, due to factors such as high temperatures, humidity, physical activity, and insufficient water intake. Individuals exposed to high temperatures and humidity without proper hydration and cooling are vulnerable to heat stress.

Recognizing the symptoms of heat stress is crucial, as they can vary from person to person and include tension, irritability, poor sleep, decreased motivation, lack of interest in activities, and low mood. Poor sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and decreased work productivity can trigger symptoms of depression and anxiety, which can worsen over time. Mindfulness, relaxation techniques, good sleep hygiene, a healthy diet, hydration, and exploring new ways to handle stress are recommended to mitigate the effects of heat stress.

Health experts suggest staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals, practicing mindfulness, engaging in breathing exercises, using meditation, maintaining a consistent sleep routine, and avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures. It is important to listen to your body, acknowledge your feelings, and take proactive steps to prevent heat-related health issues. By prioritizing mental and physical well-being, individuals can better cope with the challenges of extreme heat and maintain their productivity and overall health during hot weather.
