Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the central nervous system, disrupting the communication between the brain and spinal cord. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has partnered with 66 coffee shops across the country to raise awareness about MS. These cafes will serve coffee in cups labelled with the phrase ‘Navigating MS Together’ along with badges and stickers supporting and raising awareness for the condition. A QR code on the cups will provide access to personal stories and information about MS. The campaign aims to educate the public about MS and provide support for those living with the condition.
The campaign, which kicks off on World MS Day, May 30, and continues until June 2, features rebranded orange coffee cups symbolizing hope for MS patients. These cups represent optimism, confidence, enthusiasm, and warmth. The initiative aims to highlight the challenges faced by MS patients, such as cognitive changes, fatigue, and walking difficulties. Visual disturbances are also common, impacting everyday tasks and quality of life. By increasing public awareness and support for MS, the campaign seeks to improve the lives of those affected by the condition.
Mariam Al Qubaisi, a MS ambassador at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, shared her personal journey of living with MS. She first experienced symptoms at the age of 17 during her high school sports day. After years of misdiagnoses, Mariam was finally diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting MS (RRMS) in 2019. The lack of information and misconceptions surrounding MS caused her anxiety and confusion, but over the years, she has learned to better understand and manage her condition. Through her experiences, Mariam hopes to raise awareness about MS and educate the public about the condition.
As a result of living with MS for 11 years, Mariam has gained a deeper understanding of the condition and learned how to manage her symptoms effectively. She believes that initiatives like the coffee cup campaign will have a positive impact by increasing awareness of MS. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the UAE actively supports the MS community through education, advocacy, and efforts to find a cure for the condition. By hosting events and providing information about MS, the society aims to improve the lives of people living with MS and their communities.
Established in 2022 under the Ministry of Community Development, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a UAE-based NGO dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with MS. Through partnerships with local businesses and initiatives like the coffee cup campaign, the society aims to raise awareness about MS and provide support for those affected by the condition. By educating the public and advocating for MS patients, the society strives to create a more inclusive and supportive community for individuals living with MS in the UAE.
