Arthritis, a condition characterized by joint inflammation, is a common issue that affects individuals over the age of 50. However, sports participation without proper precautions can also lead to an early onset of arthritis in young athletes. This was the case for a 24-year-old Dubai-based football player, Mohammed, who neglected his knee health for a while, leading to a loss of cartilage. Prompt medical intervention in the form of a cartilage transplant spared him from developing arthritis at a young age. Dr. Karthikraj Kuberakani, an orthopedic surgeon at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital, highlighted the importance of addressing such injuries early to prevent long-term complications like arthritis.

Frequent participation in sports such as football, cricket, rugby, wrestling, and tennis can increase the risk of early osteoarthritis due to repetitive high-impact movements and traumatic events. Hayd’n Hill, a sports physiotherapist, emphasized the need for athletes to build up strength and muscle endurance gradually to reduce the risk of arthritis. He also recommended seeking expert guidance to prevent injuries from overloading the body. Additionally, experts suggest engaging in hydrotherapy and swimming exercises to strengthen muscles without straining the joints, reducing the likelihood of sports-related injuries.

To mitigate the risk of arthritis, individuals should focus on regular exercise, a healthy diet, and appropriate supplements. Dr. Karthikraj emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle to prevent arthritis caused by wear and tear, autoimmune issues, or hormonal imbalances. He recommended spending six months to a year building muscle strength, incorporating cardio exercises, and dedicating time to stretching and flexibility routines. This comprehensive approach can reduce sports injuries by up to 30 percent and promote overall joint health and mobility.

Saina Nehwal, an Indian badminton player and Olympic bronze medalist, recently revealed her struggles with arthritis, highlighting the challenges faced by athletes due to the physical demands of their sport. Personalized training programs, under the guidance of physiotherapists, personal trainers, or sports doctors, can help athletes enhance their fitness levels and prevent injuries. Hayd’n stressed the importance of starting slowly and gradually increasing exercise intensity to avoid overloading the body and risking injury. By focusing on low-impact endurance sports and strength training, individuals can strengthen their joints and bones, even in older age.

In conclusion, preventive measures and early intervention are crucial in addressing sports-related injuries and preventing the onset of arthritis in young athletes. By incorporating strength training, hydrotherapy, and a balanced exercise regimen, individuals can reduce the risk of joint inflammation and maintain optimal joint health. A holistic approach that includes regular exercise, proper nutrition, and expert guidance can help athletes safeguard their musculoskeletal health and prolong their sporting careers. Awareness of one’s body and proactive management of minor issues can prevent long-term complications and promote overall well-being in sports enthusiasts.
