Doctors in the UAE have issued a warning about the dangers of chronic e-cigarette usage, stating that it can lead to serious health conditions such as vape punch or popcorn lungs, which can be fatal. Dr. Mohamed Saifeldin Abdelrahman Mohamed, a specialist pulmonologist at Thumbay University Hospital, explained that vape punch and popcorn lung can have fatal consequences, with each condition having its own impact and progression.
A recent case at Thumbay University Hospital in Ajman involved a 23-year-old patient who experienced lung damage attributed to e-cigarette use, leading to coughing up blood. MRI imaging confirmed the damage was related to vaping, and doctors advised the patient to stop immediately. This case highlights the real and immediate dangers associated with e-cigarette use and the potential consequences on one’s health.
Vape punch refers to acute lung injury caused by vaping, resulting in sudden and severe respiratory distress. Patients may experience a drastic drop in oxygen levels, leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and requiring intensive care and mechanical ventilation. On the other hand, popcorn lung, or constrictive bronchiolitis, is an irreversible lung disease caused by inhaling chemicals that damage the airways, leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
There has been a growing number of patients presenting with breathing difficulties linked to e-cigarette use, with individuals as young as 15 and as old as 55-60 seeking medical attention for lung-related issues. Common symptoms include chest pain, coughing up blood, reduced lung capacity, and recurrent chest infections. Doctors emphasize the importance of recognizing these symptoms as red flags for severe lung injury caused by smoking or vaping.
Healthcare specialists have highlighted the various health risks associated with excessive vaping, including respiratory problems, nicotine addiction, cardiovascular effects, and oral health issues. While the long-term effects of e-cigarette use are still being studied, the immediate dangers of prolonged exposure to chemicals in e-cigarettes cannot be ignored. It is crucial for individuals to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to protect their health.
In light of these risks, doctors advise the public to avoid smoking or vaping to prevent severe complications such as systemic shutdown and increased susceptibility to infections from conditions like vape punch and popcorn lung. Harmful chemicals in e-cigarettes can cause significant respiratory damage, impairing lung function and leading to serious health consequences. It is important for individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms related to vaping to seek medical attention early, stop vaping, avoid irritants, and educate themselves about the risks associated with e-liquids.
