Gulshan Kavarana’s journey with special needs children began at a young age due to her cousin, Kersi, who had Down Syndrome. This deep connection led her to volunteer at a special needs school and eventually start a support group for families of individuals with disabilities. Despite her passion for helping others, when she found out her second daughter, Zara, had Dravet Syndrome, Gulshan was in denial and struggled to come to terms with the diagnosis.
The turning point came when Zara had a severe reaction to a routine vaccine, leading to seizures and a diagnosis of epilepsy. This experience prompted Gulshan to start Special Families Support (SFS) in Dubai to provide a platform for families to share their stories and support each other. Through her journey, she has encouraged parents to focus on enjoying time with their children and seek support when needed.
Art has always been a significant part of Gulshan’s life, and she used it to teach life skills to children with disabilities. Her work with Mawaheb, an organization that hones the artistic talents of individuals with determination, further solidified her belief in the power of art as a form of expression and therapy. She has also mentored Emirati artist Abdulla Lutfi and hosts a podcast where she features people with disabilities sharing their stories.
Gulshan’s story has had a profound impact on the special needs community, as she offers a unique perspective having lived through similar challenges. She emphasizes the importance of self-care for parents and the need to balance caregiving with personal well-being. Despite the difficulties, Gulshan finds solace in knowing that Zara is content with her life, even though she requires extensive care and support. Through her work and advocacy, she continues to influence and support families in similar situations.
Overall, Gulshan Kavarana’s journey is a testament to the resilience and strength of parents and families dealing with special needs. Her dedication to creating support systems and using art as a means of therapy has made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals in the special needs community. Through her work, she continues to advocate for understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals with disabilities and their families.
