In today’s rapidly changing world, the need for a new kind of leadership is becoming increasingly evident. Traditional leadership models may not be sufficient to address the complex global challenges we face today, such as climate change, technological disruption, and recovering from a pandemic. Renée McGowan, the CEO of Marsh McLennan IMEA, advocates for a new leadership approach that emphasizes collaboration, empathy, and the ability to navigate uncertainty and change effectively. With 25 years of experience in steering regional and international businesses, McGowan has authored a book titled “The Friday Email—88 Tips for Aspiring Leaders” that focuses on fostering the leaders of tomorrow.

In a recent interview with Khaleej Times, McGowan discussed the importance of choosing mastery over success, the concept of slowing down to accelerate progress, and the pivotal role cognitive diversity will play in shaping business success in the future. During the pandemic, McGowan observed the emotional challenges that emerged in organizations, emphasizing the importance of empathetic leadership. She highlighted the need for leaders to cultivate cognitive diversity in their teams to foster innovative thinking and decision-making processes.

McGowan stressed the significance of human-to-human connections in leadership and how it can drive business success in the future. She emphasized the role of empathy and cognitive diversity in shaping the leaders of tomorrow, stating that tomorrow’s leaders will need to embrace diverse perspectives and skills to navigate increasingly complex challenges. McGowan shared her own experience of realizing the limitations of having a team that thinks similarly, underscoring the importance of cognitive diversity for growth and innovation.

Discussing the concept of professional growth, McGowan emphasized the importance of constant learning and skill development. She encouraged leaders to embrace cognitive diversity in their teams, even if it feels uncomfortable or challenging at first. McGowan also touched on the concept of an abundance mindset, which focuses on collaboration and creating opportunities for everyone to succeed. She highlighted the challenges individuals face in adopting an abundance mindset but emphasized the importance of shifting from a scarcity mindset to one that promotes collaboration and mutual success.

In her book, McGowan advocates for choosing mastery over success, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and growth. She discussed the need to slow down in today’s fast-paced world, emphasizing the importance of pausing to assess decisions and focusing on mastering key skills. McGowan also shared her experiences living in the UAE and witnessing the region’s growth, praising the visionary agendas and ambitious goals set by the country.

Regarding the evolving role of women in business leadership in the region, McGowan noted the increasing opportunities for female leaders and the value of diversity in perspectives. She expressed confidence in seeing a steady increase in the number of women in senior roles in the coming years, as companies recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives. McGowan also highlighted the upcoming impact of Generation Z in leadership roles, bringing new perspectives on technology and communication styles.
