Garr first spoke publicly about her struggles with multiple sclerosis in 2002 to raise awareness about the chronic autoimmune disease. Throughout her career, she faced various health challenges, including undergoing surgery to repair an aneurysm in 2007.

Garr’s journey in the entertainment industry began as a background dancer in Elvis Presley movies. Her mother, who was also a dancer, enrolled her in dance classes at a young age, leading to her first professional gig in the road company for West Side Story. She transitioned to dancing in movies and eventually landed roles in television shows like Batman and Dr. Kildare. In 1974, Garr gained recognition for her supporting role in the thriller, The Conversation, which eventually led to her breakout role as Gene Wilder’s lab assistant in the popular horror comedy Young Frankenstein, where she showcased her comedic talents.
