The demand for mental health services in the UAE is on the rise as more residents are seeking help for anxiety, depression, and stress. Dr. Adnan Ahmadiazad, a specialist psychiatrist at Thumbay University Hospital, highlighted the increasing interest in preventive care, with more individuals seeking therapy and counseling to maintain their overall well-being. He mentioned that there is a growing awareness and acceptance of mental health issues, leading to a higher demand for services to address anxiety, depression, and stress. Many people are now proactively seeking professional help to manage their mental health.
A recent study by Knight Frank revealed that the UAE needs additional psychiatrists and psychiatric beds to meet the increasing demand for mental health services, especially as the country’s population is projected to reach nearly 11 million by 2030. The study emphasized the impact of societal changes and advancements on mental health conditions, particularly among individuals aged 20-39. The UAE is also expected to see a rise in the number of elderly individuals who may require mental health care.
Anamika Vajpeyi, a clinical psychologist, and Academic Program Chair for the Bachelor’s in Social Work Program at the Higher Colleges of Technology, noted that the demand for mental health services in the UAE is escalating, particularly among the youth. She highlighted the importance of addressing the disparity between the needs of the population and the available services. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of the population in the UAE has experienced at least one mental disorder, with anxiety and depression being prevalent. Despite a high percentage of affected individuals seeking help, resources for mental health care remain inadequate.
Access to mental healthcare in the UAE is crucial, given the diverse population, including a large expatriate community. Clinicians are encouraged to use culturally sensitive and flexible approaches to meet the needs of different cultural backgrounds. Dr. Ahmadiazad emphasized that the country’s high per capita income allows many people to access high-quality mental health care. The government’s investment in mental health services and overall healthcare infrastructure complements the financial capacity of the population. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance the general well-being of individuals in the UAE.
