Danah Al Ali, an Emirati mountaineer, made history by becoming the second Emirati woman to summit Mount Everest. Not satisfied with that achievement, she went on to climb Lhotse, becoming the first Emirati woman to summit both peaks in under 24 hours. Lhotse is the fourth-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. Despite not initially planning to climb Lhotse, Danah took on the challenge and completed it successfully, showcasing her mental strength and determination.
Danah’s journey into mountain climbing began in 2013 when she decided to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Despite lacking prior experience, she hired a personal trainer to prepare for the climb and successfully reached the summit. Her love for extreme sports drove her to pursue even greater challenges, leading her to summit Mount Elbrus in Russia, Aconcagua in South America, and undergo technical and ice climbing training in Chamonix.
To prepare for her Everest expedition, Danah used actual mountains as her training ground and took her children along whenever possible to make the experience enjoyable for them. Despite facing setbacks due to unforeseen circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Danah remained resilient and focused on achieving her goal. She dedicated six months to training in Ski Dubai and the desert, as well as using a Hypoxico tent to pre-acclimatize her body to the altitude.
Balancing motherhood and ambition, Danah had to overcome cultural and family challenges when pursuing her mountaineering dreams. Educating herself on the risks involved and conducting thorough research on expedition companies helped Danah ensure her safety during climbs. Building bonds with fellow climbers from around the world and learning valuable lessons in resilience and gratitude have been some of the key takeaways from Danah’s mountaineering experiences.
Danah’s determination and passion for challenging herself in the great outdoors continue to drive her, with another climb already on her mind despite initially thinking she might not want to undertake another expedition after Everest. The thrill of overcoming obstacles and pushing her limits motivates Danah to keep pursuing her passion for mountain climbing and outdoor adventures.
