Farida Talaat, a Dubai-based entrepreneur, comes from a family with a rich background in crafting and design. She grew up surrounded by fabrics and haute couture patterns, sparking her interest in quilting. Farida believes quilting is a beautiful blend of creativity, history, and craftsmanship that allows for artistic expression and storytelling through fabric. Her start-up, Quild Dubai, merges the timeless technique of quilting with contemporary design, offering unique and sustainable pieces crafted by Farida herself.

At Quild Dubai, sustainability is a key component of Farida’s brand. She upcycles fabrics, including unused textiles and discarded garments, to create one-of-a-kind pieces. The brand also uses eco-friendly materials and packaging to minimize its environmental footprint. Despite challenges in sourcing high-quality upcycled materials consistently, Farida’s commitment to sustainability pushes her to innovate and find new ways to incorporate this principle into her designs.

Designing quilts for Dubai’s hot climate involves selecting lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to provide comfort without adding excessive warmth. The designs focus on creating layers that can be easily adjusted according to the temperature. Techniques such as thin layering, light batting, and airy patterns help ensure that the quilts are suitable for the hot weather while remaining stylish and beautiful.

Farida blends traditional quilting techniques with modern design aesthetics to achieve a balanced and unique style. By combining classic quilting techniques with contemporary design elements like bold colors and unique fabric combinations, she creates pieces that are both timeless and current. The brand also incorporates cultural motifs that reflect the rich heritage of the region, resonating deeply with the audience and adding a distinct cultural identity to the pieces.

Aspiring entrepreneurs looking to create sustainable fashion brands should stay true to their initial proposition while constantly updating it over time. Brands should prioritize sustainability in their business model from the start and be creative in sourcing materials and designing products. Farida finds inspiration from her travels, art, and observations about global cultural exchange, staying connected with the quilting community and keeping abreast of art happenings worldwide to spark new ideas.

One project that holds special significance for Farida is the custom baby quilts she creates. Each quilt is personalized with the newborn’s initials, designed to be cherished keepsakes that wrap them in warmth and love from the moment they are born. This project celebrates new beginnings and allows Quild Dubai to be a part of a precious moment in a family’s life, reflecting the brand’s commitment to creating meaningful and sustainable pieces.
