American Hospital Dubai has made a significant impact on the life of a three-year-old boy from Kazakhstan, Nurlan Aman, who was suffering from Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE). Despite multiple investigations, including MRI and whole genome sequencing, the cause of Aman’s condition remained unknown. Additionally, the nine medications he was on failed to bring about a noticeable reduction in his seizures. This led his parents to seek help from Dr Ubaid Shah, a consultant pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at American Hospital Dubai.

Dr. Shah emphasized the importance of prompt diagnosis and tailored treatment for pediatric patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. He stated that about 30% of patients with epilepsy in children have drug-resistant epilepsy and require specialized care from epileptologists. A comprehensive evaluation of patients with epilepsy is crucial to determine the type of epilepsy, underlying cause, and prognosis, which guides the treatment pathway.

After trying a ketogenic diet that initially showed improvement but then resulted in recurrent seizures, Dr. Shah recommended Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy for Aman. VNS uses an implantable device to deliver electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve, which has been shown to significantly reduce seizure periodicity. Dr. Shah stressed the importance of candidate selection for VNS and highlighted the commitment of American Hospital Dubai to delivering results-oriented treatment for its patients.

Dr. Shah explained that there are various forms of epilepsy, each requiring a different treatment approach. For drug-resistant epilepsies that are not candidates for surgery, novel treatments like Vagal Nerve Stimulation offer significant chances of reducing seizures. American Hospital Dubai offers a complete evaluation of patients with epilepsy, including specialized scans to localize the origin of seizures within the brain and identify the underlying cause of epilepsy.

Following a successful VNS device implant, Dr. Shah expressed optimism about Aman’s prognosis, expecting better seizure control as they adjust the device’s settings and reduce his medications. Aman’s parents expressed gratitude for the treatment received at American Hospital Dubai, especially for the recommendation of VNS therapy by Dr. Shah and the support provided by Dr. Homapour, a consultant neurosurgeon. They are hopeful that VNS will decrease Aman’s seizures and improve his quality of life, allowing him to catch up with his peers.

In conclusion, American Hospital Dubai’s accurate recommendation of Vagal Nerve Stimulation therapy has played a crucial role in improving the quality of life for Nurlan Aman, a three-year-old boy suffering from Drug-Resistant Epilepsy. The hospital’s commitment to providing specialized care for pediatric patients with epilepsy, thorough evaluations, and access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options highlights its dedication to delivering positive outcomes for its patients. Dr. Shah’s expertise and personalized approach in selecting the most suitable treatment option, such as VNS therapy, have given hope to Aman’s family and are expected to lead to a significant improvement in his health and well-being.
