Bayer Leverkusen took a significant step towards the Europa League final with a 2-0 victory over Roma in the first leg of their semi-final clash. The Bundesliga champions extended their unbeaten run to 47 matches with goals from Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich. Xabi Alonso’s men are now on track to potentially win their first European trophy since 1988.

Roma faces an uphill battle in the second leg after a lackluster performance in Rome. They struggled to create scoring opportunities and Matej Kovar’s goal was rarely tested. The Italian side will need a massive turnaround to reach their third European final in as many years. Meanwhile, Leverkusen are eyeing a treble with ambitions to win the Bundesliga, German Cup, and Europa League.

Alonso’s team showcased their dominance in the match, with a solid defensive performance and clinical finishing. They were in control throughout the game and did not require any last-minute heroics to secure the win. Leverkusen’s conservative approach paid off, and they will be confident heading into the second leg at home.

The match saw moments of brilliance from both sides, with Roma’s Romelu Lukaku hitting the woodwork and Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong missing a golden opportunity. A defensive error from Roma led to Wirtz’s opening goal, with the hosts struggling to contain Leverkusen’s attacking threats. Andrich’s late strike further cemented Leverkusen’s advantage in the tie.

Roma’s chances of a comeback in the second leg look slim, especially after Tammy Abraham missed a crucial chance in stoppage time. Leverkusen’s strong performance in Rome has put them in a prime position to progress to the final in Dublin. The German side will now focus on maintaining their unbeaten run and securing their spot in the Europa League final.
