Kuwait highlights role in shaping global AI policies at international summit

Kuwait has reaffirmed its commitment to playing a pivotal role in shaping international policies and standards that promote the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and modern technologies. Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Nader Al-Jallal, emphasized Kuwait’s dedication to enhancing global cooperation for a more stable, just, and developed future during the inauguration of the International Summit on Artificial Intelligence Horizons 2025.

## Kuwait’s Vision for AI-Driven Development

The summit, organized by the Arab Open University in Kuwait, brought together experts and specialists from Kuwait and abroad to discuss the future of AI and its applications. Dr. Al-Jallal described AI as “the language of the new world” and a transformative tool shaping human interaction with science, work, and daily life. He highlighted the potential of AI to advance education, healthcare, environmental protection, and economic development, underscoring the need for ethical governance to ensure AI remains a tool for human progress.

## The Role of AI in Shaping the Future

Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Open University, emphasized AI’s role as a transformative force reshaping life across various sectors. He stressed the importance of establishing clear legislation and policies to ensure AI’s ethical and safe use. Prince Abdulaziz noted that AI adoption in Arab societies is not merely a technological advancement but a means to empower individuals, improve quality of life, and build sustainable knowledge systems.

### AI Applications in Education and Healthcare

The summit highlighted AI’s contributions to education through data-driven insights for students and teachers, as well as its role in healthcare by assisting medical professionals in diagnosis and disease prediction. Dr. Omar Al-Jarrah, Vice President for Planning and Development and Chief Information Officer, delivered a keynote speech on “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education,” emphasizing the potential of AI to revolutionize the education sector.

## Kuwait’s Digital Strategy and AI Initiatives

Dr. Khaled Al-Zamil, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Authority for Communications and Information Technology, emphasized that AI is a central pillar for building sustainable, efficient, and equitable economies. He highlighted Kuwait’s efforts to build an integrated digital ecosystem in partnership with government agencies, academia, and the private sector, positioning the country as a regional hub for AI and technological innovation.

### Center of Excellence for AI

Dr. Muhammad Al-Zakari, President of the Arab Open University in the Arab World, announced the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence at the university, aimed at serving Arab societies and advancing applied research and innovation. The center will focus on transforming knowledge into practical capabilities and technology into empowering tools, reinforcing the university’s role as a knowledge incubator and a driver of future innovation.

## Summit Activities and Outcomes

The two-day summit featured keynote speeches, interactive workshops led by global experts, dialogue sessions with decision-makers and researchers, and a hackathon exploring AI applications. The event showcased student innovations and projects, providing a platform for youth to participate in innovation and leverage AI for societal benefit. The summit’s activities are expected to further reinforce Kuwait’s role in shaping the future of technology, sustainability, and education in the Arab world.
