Doha, Qatar – The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has partnered with Google Cloud to accelerate its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). This strategic collaboration, announced today, aims to enhance operational efficiency, improve customer service, and bolster Qatar’s position as a regional leader in technological innovation. The partnership will focus on four key initiatives leveraging Google Cloud’s advanced AI platforms.

The agreement between Kahramaa and Google Cloud was unveiled in Doha and represents a significant investment in Qatar’s digital infrastructure. It comes as the nation continues to prioritize diversification away from hydrocarbons and towards a knowledge-based economy, with technology playing a central role. The partnership is expected to impact areas ranging from energy and water management to workforce development.

Advancing AI Capabilities at Kahramaa

The core of the partnership lies in establishing a robust AI framework within Kahramaa. This framework will utilize Google Cloud’s machine learning (ML) capabilities, specifically Vertex AI and Gemini Enterprise, to systematically develop, deploy, and manage AI solutions. According to Kahramaa President Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab, this will empower employees with cutting-edge tools and contribute to Qatar’s national aspirations for innovation.

Key Initiatives of the Partnership

The collaboration encompasses several distinct projects. Firstly, Kahramaa will migrate its data center to Google Cloud’s Doha region, enhancing scalability and operational resilience. This move supports Kahramaa’s multi-cloud strategy, ensuring business continuity and access to advanced cloud services.

Secondly, the partnership will focus on optimizing energy and water management systems through AI-powered predictive maintenance. This aims to reduce waste, improve resource allocation, and enhance the reliability of Qatar’s essential utilities.

Thirdly, Kahramaa plans to improve customer service by implementing AI-powered assistants. These assistants will be able to handle routine inquiries, provide personalized support, and streamline interactions with customers. This initiative aligns with Qatar’s broader efforts to enhance public service delivery.

Finally, a comprehensive training program will be launched to upskill Kahramaa employees in AI technologies. This program will facilitate the transition to Google’s Gemini Enterprise platform, designed to optimize workflows and improve user experience. The development of a skilled workforce is crucial for sustaining long-term digital transformation.

Ghassan Kosta, regional general manager at Google Cloud Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Iraq, emphasized the investment in the future of AI in the region. He stated that Google Cloud is committed to providing Kahramaa with the expertise and platform needed to develop ethical AI solutions and foster a new generation of tech professionals.

The partnership reflects Qatar’s commitment to its National Vision 2030 and Digital Agenda 2030, which prioritize the establishment of a technology hub. The country has been actively seeking to attract foreign investment in its technology sector and to develop a local ecosystem of innovation. This collaboration with Google Cloud is a significant step in that direction.

The move to Google Cloud also aligns with a growing trend among organizations in the Middle East to adopt cloud-based solutions for their IT infrastructure. Cloud computing offers benefits such as cost savings, increased agility, and improved security. The availability of a Google Cloud region in Doha further incentivizes local adoption by reducing latency and ensuring data sovereignty. The implementation of machine learning will be a key component of this transition.

Looking ahead, the success of this partnership will depend on the effective integration of Google Cloud’s technologies into Kahramaa’s existing systems and the successful upskilling of its workforce. The timeline for full implementation of the four initiatives has not been publicly disclosed, but stakeholders will be closely monitoring the progress of the data center migration and the rollout of the AI-powered solutions. Further announcements regarding specific project milestones and outcomes are expected in the coming months.

The long-term impact on Qatar’s sustainability goals, through optimized resource management, will also be a key area to watch.
