Conjoined twins Azaria and Azura Elson from Jamaica underwent a successful separation surgery at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh on Thursday. The complex operation was performed by a team of 25 medical specialists under the Saudi Program for Separating Conjoined Twins.

According to Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, head of the medical team, the six-stage surgery lasted around nine hours. The twins, who shared a lower chest, abdomen, and liver, were connected at multiple organs, including possibly their intestines and pericardium.

Separation Surgery and Medical Team

The surgical team, comprising experts in pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, and anesthesia, worked together to separate the twins. Dr. Al-Rabeeah highlighted that this was the 67th conjoined twin separation performed under the Saudi program, demonstrating the country’s advanced medical capabilities.

The twins arrived in Saudi Arabia on July 28 and underwent thorough medical examinations before the surgery. The report indicates that the twins’ condition was carefully evaluated to determine the best course of action for the separation.

Saudi Program for Separating Conjoined Twins

The Saudi Program for Separating Conjoined Twins has gained international recognition for its expertise in handling complex cases. According to the Ministry of National Guard, the program reflects the high level of professional competence and international standing of the Saudi medical staff.

Dr. Al-Rabeeah noted that the program’s success is a testament to the country’s commitment to providing advanced medical care. The program has treated numerous conjoined twin cases, with the Elson twins being the latest success story.

Post-Surgery Care and Recovery

Following the successful surgery, the twins are expected to receive further medical care and monitoring. The medical team will continue to assess their condition and provide necessary treatment to ensure a smooth recovery.

The family of the twins expressed their gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman for the special care given to their children. They thanked the medical team for their expertise and dedication to the twins’ treatment.

As the twins continue their recovery, the medical team will remain involved in their care. The next steps in their treatment will be determined based on their progress, with the goal of achieving a full recovery.
