The Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Switzerland and Italy ended in a surprising 2-0 victory for Switzerland. The defending champions, Italy, had a lackluster performance, showing poor decision-making and sloppy play throughout the game. Switzerland capitalized on Italy’s mistakes with two superb strikes from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.

Italy struggled to keep possession of the ball in the first half, constantly giving it away to the Swiss team. Despite a few chances, including a missed opportunity by Breel Embolo, Italy failed to make an impact on the game. Stephan El Shaaraway had a promising moment with a shot blocked for a corner, but he was subbed off at halftime, leaving Italy without a key player.

Switzerland’s breakthrough came in the 37th minute with a brilliantly executed goal by Freuler. Vargas added to the lead with a stunning shot into the top corner just a minute into the second half. Italy’s defense looked disorganized and passive, allowing Switzerland to dominate the game. Despite a few attempts hitting the woodwork, Italy was unable to score, leading to their disappointing defeat.

Italian coach Luciano Spalletti emphasized the lack of pace and incisiveness in his team’s performance, admitting that Switzerland outplayed them. The Swiss players celebrated their victory, showing teamwork and determination on the field. They will face the winner of the England vs. Slovakia match in the quarter-finals, while Italy exits the tournament with a disappointing performance.

Overall, Switzerland’s solid defense and clinical finishing proved to be the difference in the game against Italy. The Swiss team displayed a strong team spirit and a desire to win, showcasing their potential in the tournament. Italy’s lackluster performance and inability to create meaningful opportunities cost them the chance to progress further. The game served as a lesson for Italy to reflect on and improve upon for future competitions.
