The Embassy of Italy in Doha recently celebrated the “Italian National Unity and Armed Forces Day”, marking the end of World War and celebrating Italy’s national unity. The event was attended by Ambassador of Italy to Qatar H E Paolo Toschi, Italian Defence Attaché Colonel Fausto Ricchetti, and Italian Representative to the NATO Military Committee Admiral Dario Giacomin, along with other diplomats and dignitaries. The celebration highlighted the strong cooperation in the defence sector between Italy and Qatar, which was recently emphasized during the state visit of His Highness the Amir to Rome. This partnership includes joint training and exercises, as well as industrial and technological cooperation.

In a unique honor to the growing partnership between Italy and Qatar, the oldest active military vessel in the Italian Navy, “Amerigo Vespucci”, will be stationed in Doha’s Old Port from December 17 to 22, 2024, in commemoration of Qatar’s National Day. The ship, commissioned in 1931, serves as a historical and iconic training vessel in addition to being an Ambassador of Unesco and Unicef. With planned on-board visits and various activities in an “Italian Village” set up alongside the ship, the event aims to promote Italian culture, art, and lifestyle through a range of activities such as conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and more. Ambassador H E Paolo Toschi highlighted the importance of the friendship between Italy and Qatar’s militaries as a key aspect of their bilateral relationship.

In his address, Defence Attaché Colonel Ricchetti emphasized the theme of the 2024 National Unity Day and Armed Forces Day as “Siamo l’Italia”, meaning “We are Italy”. He praised the dedication of the Italian armed forces in ensuring safety and peace both domestically and internationally, particularly during crisis and emergency situations. He expressed gratitude to Qatar for their partnership, which has strengthened the bonds between the two nations and supported various missions around the world. The presence of “Nave Vespucci” in Qatar and the planned activities within the Italian Village serve as a special gift from Italy to Qatar, symbolizing the success of their bilateral partnership.

The event was not only a celebration of Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day, but also an opportunity to showcase the strong relationship between Italy and Qatar in the defence sector. The joint training and exercises, as well as the industrial and technological cooperation, demonstrate a deep collaboration between the two countries. The stationing of the historic ship “Amerigo Vespucci” in Doha’s Old Port serves as a unique honor to the growing partnership, allowing the public to engage with Italian culture, art, and lifestyle through various activities in the Italian Village. This event further strengthens the bonds between Italy and Qatar.

The visit of “Nave Vespucci” to Doha, alongside the rich program of activities planned in the Italian Village, serves as a special tribute to the successful partnership between Italy and Qatar. The presence of the ship and the various engagements within the Village offer a unique opportunity for the public to experience Italian culture and heritage. Ambassador Paolo Toschi and Defence Attaché Colonel Ricchetti both emphasized the importance of the friendship between Italy and Qatar’s militaries as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship. The event was not only a celebration of Italy’s National Unity and Armed Forces Day, but also a demonstration of the strong cooperation between the two countries in the defence sector.
