Connectivity is key for Europe’s resurgence and Hungary’s foreign policy strategy centered on connectivity is attracting global attention. Budapest’s role as a pivotal state in promoting peace and national sovereignty, bridging East and West, and serving as a gateway to the European Union has been recognized through Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit, highlighting Hungary’s significance in the international landscape. This strategy, known as the ‘Hussar Cut,’ has propelled Hungary’s economic growth significantly, leading to a 38% increase in GDP per capita in the past 13 years. The country has achieved remarkable success in transforming its economy into an open, export-oriented model, becoming the 11th most complex economy according to the Harvard Economic Complexity Index.

Hungary’s efforts to enhance connectivity extend across various sectors, from trade to infrastructure, cultural, and scientific exchange. Initiatives such as expanding energy connections, renovations in transportation, and attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) have contributed to the country’s economic development. Strategic partnerships with countries and companies offering the best technology globally, such as China, have played a crucial role in Hungary’s growth. This is evident in the case of BYD, China’s top electric vehicle manufacturer, establishing its first European passenger car facility in Hungary.

The current geopolitical environment underscores the need for Europe to adopt a strategy of prudent connectivity to ensure economic prosperity and security. European GDP growth lags behind the US and China, and Europe faces high import dependency. Hungary advocates for becoming a keystone state, a pivotal hub in the interconnected global landscape, to mitigate one-way dependencies, safeguard sovereignty, and promote economic prosperity. As Hungary prepares to exercise the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, it aims to showcase the importance of connectivity for Europe’s strength and unity.

Amidst global tensions and the logic of bloc formation, Hungary emphasizes the importance of maintaining cool, calm, and connected relations to avoid worsening dependences, economic decline, and geopolitical periphery status. By prioritizing strategic partnerships and connectivity initiatives, Hungary seeks to position itself as a keystone state in the international landscape, contributing to the success of the region and Europe as a whole. As Europe navigates through increased global competition, Hungary’s vision of connectivity serves as a vital pillar for Europe’s resurgence and collective strength.
