Is the Keto Diet Responsible for Accelerating the Aging of Organs?

A recent study conducted by researchers from UTHealth San Antonio, TX, explored the effects of ketogenic diets on mice. This type of diet, which is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, has gained popularity as a method for weight loss. However, concerns have been raised about the potential risks associated with keto diets. The study found that mice on ketogenic diets experienced increased rates of cellular aging in their body organs. The macronutrient breakdown of a ketogenic diet typically consists of 55-60% calories from fats, 30-35% from protein, and 5-10% from carbohydrates.

The findings of the study showed that mice on ketogenic diets had higher levels of cellular aging in organs such as the heart and kidneys compared to the control group. The diet tested on the mice involved high fat intake, with one group consuming Crisco and another group consuming cocoa butter. Both groups showed evidence of organ damage and cellular senescence. The researchers also discovered that the cellular senescence process in the mice was associated with the proteins AMPK and p53. When these pathways were blocked, the levels of cellular senescence decreased.

Despite the potential risks associated with ketogenic diets, the research suggests that the damage caused by the diet may be reversible. By discontinuing the diet or using medications to block certain proteins, it is possible to manage the cellular aging markers. Registered dietician Scott Keatley emphasized the need for caution when recommending ketogenic diets, especially for patients with existing organ concerns or those at risk for chronic diseases. Longitudinal trials in humans are necessary to fully understand the long-term effects of ketogenic diets on cellular senescence.

Immunology and endocrinology specialist Steve Gendron highlighted the importance of conducting long-term studies in diverse populations to fully understand how ketogenic diets impact organ health and overall well-being. While the study provided valuable insights into the potential risks of ketogenic diets, Gendron suggested that more research is needed to explore the variety of ways to implement a ketogenic diet and compare its effects to other dietary approaches for specific health issues. It is essential for individuals considering a ketogenic diet to seek medical guidance and be aware of the potential health risks associated with long-term adherence to this type of diet.
