The 77th Cannes Film Festival is gearing up to be an event filled with drama both on and off the screen. With Hollywood icons like Meryl Streep and Francis Ford Coppola in attendance, the festival promises to be star-studded. The organisers have even announced that the Olympic torch will make an appearance on the red carpet. However, the real excitement lies in the unexpected escape of Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who recently fled Iran after being sentenced to eight years in prison.

Rasoulof’s escape comes amidst rumours of fresh MeToo allegations within the French movie industry, adding a layer of tension to the festival. Festival director Thierry Fremaux has expressed his desire to focus on cinema and stay out of the controversies surrounding the industry. However, with a short film premiering by actor-director Judith Godreche, who has been vocal about her own past experiences with sexual abuse, the issue is likely to remain at the forefront during the festival.

In addition to the off-screen drama, there are also concerns about a potential strike by festival workers over pay and conditions. Despite these challenges, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the films being showcased at the festival. From the return of Francis Ford Coppola with his epic Megalopolis to a musical about a Mexican cartel boss undergoing a sex change, the lineup is diverse and promising. Other notable entries include a biopic of Donald Trump’s formative years and new works from acclaimed directors like David Cronenberg and Yorgos Lanthimos.

Aside from the film screenings, the festival will also be honoring industry legends like Meryl Streep and George Lucas with honorary awards. The latest installment in the Mad Max universe, Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, will also have its world premiere. Businesses along the Croisette are gearing up for the influx of festival-goers, with restaurant owners preparing to welcome VIPs and boutiques showcasing glamorous evening dresses. The Cannes Film Festival promises to be a whirlwind of glamour, talent, and controversy, making it a must-watch event for film enthusiasts worldwide.
