The 6th International Primary Health Care Conference (IPHCC) opened in Doha, Qatar, yesterday, showcasing the nation’s advancements in primary health care and its commitment to becoming a global leader in healthcare innovation. Nearly 1,000 experts, doctors, and researchers are attending the three-day event, organized by the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), under the theme “Inspiring Tomorrow: The Power of Collaboration in Primary Health Care.” The conference aims to foster collaboration and explore the latest strategies for strengthening healthcare systems.

The opening of IPHCC underscores Qatar’s ongoing National Vision 2033, which prioritizes human development, including a world-class healthcare infrastructure. According to the PHCC, Qatar’s healthcare system is rapidly evolving to meet the needs of a growing and increasingly diverse population, placing a strong emphasis on preventive measures and accessible care.

Qatar at the Forefront of Primary Health Care Development

PHCC Managing Director Dr. Mariam Abdulmalik emphasized the central role of primary health care in achieving Qatar’s health goals. She stated the strength of the national healthcare system hinges on the ability of primary care to deliver universal health coverage to all residents. Patient satisfaction with PHCC services currently stands at 80%, a key indicator of the success of these efforts.

The conference focuses on translating medical research into practical primary care applications. Discussions will also cover the integration of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Other key topics include maintaining quality and safety standards, healthcare ethics, and the importance of a collaborative, interprofessional approach to care.

Alongside the conference sessions, an exhibition is providing healthcare professionals with a platform to explore the latest medical innovations and health technologies. Minister of Public Health H E Mansoor bin Ebrahim bin Saad Al Mahmoud and Dr. Abdulmalik toured the exhibition, engaging with representatives from various companies and institutions.

Keynote Address Highlights Future of Healthcare

Professor Lord Ara Darzi, Co-Director of Imperial College London and Executive Chair of the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), delivered the keynote address, praising Qatar’s proactive approach to healthcare development. Lord Darzi noted that Qatar moved beyond planning to actively building a transformed healthcare system.

He addressed the global challenges facing healthcare, including the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and projected workforce shortages. However, he highlighted Qatar’s potential to lead the way in adopting predictive, personalized, and digitally-enabled healthcare solutions.

Lord Darzi outlined seven innovation pathways expected to shape healthcare by 2035, ranging from genetic intelligence to precision robotics. He stressed that primary care must become the “central nervous system” of a modern healthcare system, coordinating and integrating different levels of care. He also emphasized the importance of optimizing lives for both longevity and quality of life, with a focus on dignified living.

The conference sessions are designed to foster knowledge exchange between experts and provide opportunities for researchers to present their latest findings. Topics like preventive care, employee wellbeing, and healthcare for specific populations are also being addressed. Experts are also discussing the role of complementary and alternative medicine within an integrated healthcare framework.

Following the conclusion of the conference on Thursday, the PHCC is expected to release a summary of key recommendations and action plans. The long-term impact of these discussions on Qatar’s healthcare policies and implementation strategies remains to be seen, although organizers anticipate a further acceleration of innovation in the sector. Monitoring the progress of these initiatives and continued efforts to improve patient satisfaction will be crucial in the coming years.

The success of events like IPHCC underscores Qatar’s commitment to establishing itself as a regional and global hub for medical research and best practices in health.
