In a recent interview with tech billionaire Elon Musk, Former US President Donald Trump claimed that the current President Joe Biden is to blame for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump argued that his previous “strong” relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin could have prevented the conflict, as he claimed to have advised Putin not to take action. Trump stated that he could have stopped the invasion if he was still in office, citing his past interactions with Putin and his understanding of international relations. He also criticized the European Union for not matching the US’s spending on aid to Ukraine and for taking advantage of the United States in trade.

Furthermore, Trump praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him “honourable” for his handling of the phone call that led to Trump’s first impeachment in 2019. Trump expressed regret over the Ukraine situation, stating that it would not have occurred under his presidency. However, leaked text messages between Trump’s former vice-presidential pick JD Vance and far-right conspiracy theorist Charles Johnson have raised concerns. In the texts, Vance disparaged US support for Ukraine, stating that he would not even take calls from the country. These texts coincided with the congressional Republicans’ attempts to obstruct an aid package for Ukraine in October 2023.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been a focal point in international relations, with various political leaders voicing their opinions on the situation. Donald Trump’s claims that he could have prevented the invasion if he was still in office have sparked debate and criticism from supporters and opponents alike. By speaking out against President Biden and the European Union, Trump has reignited discussions on US foreign policy and global alliances. His praise for Zelenskyy and criticism of EU trade rules have drawn attention to the complexities of international diplomacy and the challenges of maintaining strong relationships with allies.

The leaked text messages between JD Vance and Charles Johnson highlight the internal divisions within the Republican party regarding US support for Ukraine. While Trump has praised Zelenskyy and criticized Biden for his handling of the situation, some members of his party have expressed skepticism and reluctance to provide aid to Ukraine. The texts also shed light on the influence of far-right figures and conspiracy theorists in shaping political discourse and decision-making processes, raising concerns about the politicization of foreign policy and national security issues.

Overall, Trump’s interview with Elon Musk has brought attention to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and the role of key political figures in shaping US foreign policy. By claiming that he could have prevented the invasion as president, Trump has underscored the importance of leadership and diplomatic relations in preventing conflicts. However, his criticisms of Biden and the EU, as well as the leaked text messages from his former vice-presidential pick, have sparked controversy and calls for transparency and accountability in US foreign policy decision-making. As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize peace and stability in the region and work together to find diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
