Iraq’s journey to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 has been nothing short of thrilling, as they secured their sixth qualification after defeating Indonesia 2-1 in extra time at the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 third-place playoff. Ali Jasim scored the winning goal in the 96th minute, sparking wild celebrations among his teammates and fans. This victory was particularly significant for Iraq, as it marked their return to the Olympic Games after an eight-year absence.

The match saw Iraq come from behind after Ivar Jenner scored for Indonesia in the 19th minute. Nihad Mohammed had several chances to put Iraq ahead, but it was Jasim who ultimately sealed the win with a clinical finish in extra time. This victory was a testament to Iraq’s fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude throughout the tournament.

The win means Iraq will join Japan and Uzbekistan as the AFC representatives at the Olympics in Paris. Coach Radhi Shenaishil, who also participated in the 1988 Olympics as a player, will lead Iraq in their quest for Olympic glory. For Indonesia, there is still a glimmer of hope as they have a chance to secure a spot in the Olympics through a winner-takes-all intercontinental playoff against Guinea on May 9. Despite the heartbreak of missing out on automatic qualification, Indonesia can still salvage their Olympic dreams with a victory in the playoff.

The match between Iraq and Indonesia was a gripping affair, with both teams leaving everything on the field in pursuit of Olympic qualification. Indonesia’s early goal had put them in the driver’s seat, but Iraq’s determination saw them claw their way back into the game. Jasim’s winning goal was a moment of brilliance that highlighted Iraq’s attacking prowess and clinical finishing. The scenes of jubilation at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium showcased the importance of this victory for Iraq and their passionate fans.

The AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for Iraq, with ups and downs along the way.
