In a recent report by the World Bank and S&P Global Marketing Intelligence, nine ports in India have managed to make it to the Global Top 100 in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for the year 2023. This significant achievement has been credited to the ambitious Sagarmala programme, which aims at the modernization and improvement of efficiency of ports in India. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, acknowledged the efforts taken by the Narendra Modi government to modernize and mechanize the ports to make them more technologically advanced, leading to improved operational efficiency and service delivery.

The successful performance of Vishakhapatnam Port in the CPPI rankings has been highlighted, with impressive metrics such as 27.5 moves per crane hour, a turnaround time of 21.4 hours, and minimal berth idle time. These factors play a crucial role in influencing customer preference and portraying the efficiency of the port in handling container ships. In addition to Vishakhapatnam, seven other Indian ports have also secured positions in the top 100, namely Pipavav, Kamarajar, Cochin, Hazira, Krishnapatnam, Chennai, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Union Minister Sonowal expressed gratitude towards the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the efficiency of ports through initiatives like Sagarmala. He stated that these efforts have helped in building resilience, incorporating new technology, and promoting green infrastructure to ensure stability in global markets and sustainability in India’s maritime industry. The government is confident that with sustained efforts in this direction, the Indian maritime sector will further enhance resilience and efficiency in maritime gateways to boost port-led economic development.

The successful performance of Indian ports in the CPPI rankings reflects the positive impact of the government’s initiatives towards modernizing and improving efficiency in the maritime sector. The improved operational efficiency and service delivery of ports in India have been crucial in enhancing the handling of ships and cargo, contributing to the overall performance and competitiveness of the Indian maritime industry. With continued focus on modernization and technological advancements, the Indian ports are expected to further strengthen their position in the global maritime landscape.
