India’s Ministry of Coal recently announced that the country produced 384.07 million tonnes (MT) of coal between April and August of 2024, which shows an increase of 6.36 percent from the same period the previous year. Despite this positive growth, there was a slight decrease in coal production in August 2024, with 62.67 MT produced compared to 67.76 MT in August 2023. This drop can be attributed to above normal precipitation impacting mining and mobility in the country.

In terms of coal supply, India saw an increase in supply across the country during the period from April to August 2024. The total coal supply stood at 412.69 MT, marking a 5.17 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. However, in August 2024, coal supply decreased slightly to 69.94 MT from 75.19 MT in August 2023. Coal supply to the power sector remains a key focus for the government, with a growth of 4.13 percent in supply to the power sector between April and August 2024.

Despite the slight decrease in coal supply in August 2024, the overall coal stock levels at thermal power plants saw a significant increase to 37.18 MT as of 31st August 2024. This marks a 32.08 percent growth compared to the same day in 2023. These results demonstrate the Ministry of Coal’s commitment to ensuring stable coal production and supply to meet the country’s energy needs, even in the face of operational challenges in the sector.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to meeting the energy demands of the country through reliable coal production and supply. By ensuring a positive trajectory in coal production and supply, the government aims to address the energy needs of the growing economy while also focusing on the power sector as a key priority. The increase in coal stock levels at thermal power plants reflects the government’s efforts to maintain a consistent and stable energy supply for the country.

In conclusion, despite some variations in coal production and supply in August 2024, India’s Ministry of Coal remains focused on meeting the energy demands of the country. By prioritizing coal supply to the power sector and ensuring stable production levels, the government is working towards addressing the operational challenges in the sector. With a commitment to reliable and sustainable energy production, India is striving to meet its energy needs while also promoting growth and development in the country.
