India’s table tennis team will be competing in the men’s and women’s team event at the upcoming Paris Olympics for the first time, marking a significant achievement for the country. Although the team has previously found success at the Commonwealth Games, they have not been able to replicate this success at the Olympics or Asian Games. However, their recent qualification for the team events has reignited hopes for India’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sport, with the men’s team ranked 14th and the women’s team ranked 11th in the world as of July.

Coach Massimo Costantini expressed his satisfaction with the team’s qualification but emphasized his desire for India to aim for a higher ranking, such as in the top 10, top eight, or even top four. He believes that being in the top 16 is not enough and that the team should strive for better performances to ensure their spot in the upcoming Olympics. Costantini highlighted the importance of comfort in the rankings, indicating that tighter rankings can create unnecessary pressure on the team.

One of India’s top prospects for the Olympics is Manika Batra, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion, who recently achieved a career-high ranking of 24. With Batra and Sreeja Akula leading the charge for the women’s team, India is hoping for a strong performance at the Paris Olympics. Costantini emphasized the need for consistency in performance rather than sporadic results to climb the world rankings, indicating that the team has the potential for greater success.

To enhance the team’s performance, Costantini has been utilizing data provided by artificial intelligence and has partnered with an Indian sports analytics company for a training camp. He believes that technology and AI can provide a better understanding of players’ performance and help make objective assessments. By making small adjustments based on data insights, similar to how changes in motorsport can impact performance, Costantini is aiming to improve the team’s overall performance in table tennis.

The Olympic table tennis tournament is set to take place at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from July 27 to August 10, providing a platform for India’s table tennis team to showcase their skills on a global stage. With the team’s qualification for the team events at the Olympics, there is optimism surrounding India’s chances of securing a medal in the sport. By leveraging technology, data-driven insights, and a focus on consistency, India’s table tennis team is set to make a strong impression at the Paris Olympics.
