Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Former doubles world number one Leander Paes and tennis broadcaster, actor, and player Vijay Amritraj made history by becoming the first Asian men to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The induction ceremonies took place at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. They were joined by British tennis journalist and author Richard Evans for the enshrinement.

Leander Paes shared his journey from playing football and hockey in his youth to eventually becoming a tennis player. He expressed his gratitude for being on stage with legends of the game who have inspired him throughout his life. Paes thanked everyone for giving him hope and acknowledged the role these individuals have played in shaping both the sport and the world we live in.

Vijay Amritraj, known for his successful tennis career and contributions to humanitarian causes, expressed his humility and honor at being part of such an exclusive group that has brought glory to the sport. He reflected on the significance of this recognition not just for himself but for his family, fellow Indians, and his countrymen around the world.

Richard Evans was inducted into the contributor category for his significant impact on the sport of tennis. Paes, an 18-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, was selected in the player category. Both Paes and Amritraj have made India the 28th nation represented in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Paes’ illustrious career includes victories in men’s and mixed doubles Grand Slams, as well as an Olympic bronze medal. He emphasized the importance of believing in oneself, working hard, and inspiring others through one’s achievements. Paes expressed his gratitude for the support of his countrymen and the opportunity to represent India on the international stage.

Amritraj, a former player ranked as high as 18th in the world, has not only excelled on the tennis court but also contributed to various humanitarian initiatives and supported tennis events in India. His induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his lasting impact on the sport and his dedication to making a difference in the world.
