The revenue generated from freight operations during this period also saw a notable increase of 11.12% compared to the previous year, amounting to Rs 14,798.11 crore, showcasing the railways’ vital role in India’s logistics sector and economy.

During June 2024, Indian Railways efficiently handled a diverse range of freight categories, contributing to its record-breaking performance. Coal shipments led the tally at 60.27 million tonnes, followed by imported coal at 8.82 MT, highlighting the railway’s crucial role in fuel transportation for various industries. Iron ore transportation reached 15.07 MT, supporting the mining and steel sectors, while pig iron and finished steel shipments amounted to 5.36 MT, benefitting the manufacturing and construction industries. Cement shipments, excluding clinker, totalled 7.56 MT, aiding infrastructure development across the country.

Indian Railways also played a significant role in the transportation of essential goods such as foodgrains, fertilizers, and mineral oil, supporting food security initiatives, agricultural productivity, and industrial applications. The railway handled 6.97 MT of containers, facilitating efficient and cost-effective intermodal transportation. Additionally, other goods totaling 10.06 MT encompassed a wide range of commodities, highlighting the railway’s comprehensive logistical capabilities across different sectors. The railway’s customer-centric approach, along with proactive efforts from business development units and agile policy-making, has been instrumental in achieving this milestone.

With the motto “Hungry for Cargo,” Indian Railways continues to enhance business efficiency and provide competitive services to meet the growing demand for freight transportation. The railway’s robust logistical capabilities and commitment to delivering quality services have contributed to its success in setting a new record for freight loading. Indian Railways’ pivotal role in India’s economy and logistics sector is evident through its significant contribution to various industries and initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and development.
