India’s hockey team made history by winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics after a 41-year drought in men’s hockey. This achievement has raised hopes of the team winning its ninth gold medal at the upcoming Paris Olympics. In the past, India has been a dominant force in the sport, winning titles on grass pitches, particularly during an era when Pakistan was also a formidable opponent.

However, the modern era of hockey has seen countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, Australia, Argentina, and Belgium dominating the sport on fast, flat astroturf surfaces. Despite this, India has emerged as a strong contender with players like Hardik Singh, the reigning World Player of the Year, and Harmanpreet Singh, considered one of the best drag flickers in the world. The recent success in Tokyo has bolstered the team’s confidence and belief in achieving a gold medal in Paris.

The competition in modern hockey is fierce, with several top-ranked teams ahead of India in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) rankings. To secure a spot in the quarterfinals, India will need to finish in the top four of a challenging pool that includes reigning champions Belgium, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. The team is focusing on fitness, defensive structure, and counterattacking strategies to enhance their performance in Paris.

The history of women’s hockey at the Olympics dates back to the 1980 Moscow Games when all invited teams boycotted the event, allowing stand-ins from Zimbabwe to win the title. Since then, the Dutch women have been dominant, winning multiple gold medals, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Netherlands women’s team has won nine of 15 World Cups and currently holds the top spot in the rankings, followed by Argentina and Germany.

In a recent match against the Netherlands, Belgium ended the Dutch women’s 26-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory. The triumph was significant for Belgium, marking their first win against their neighbors in a top competition. The upcoming 2023 European Championships will offer teams like Belgium the chance to prepare for the Olympics and showcase their skills on the international stage. With the Olympics approaching, teams are gearing up for intense competition and aiming for success in Paris.
