The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that imposes a two-year ban on players who declare their unavailability after being picked in the auction. The motive behind this rule is to prevent players from withdrawing from the tournament after the auction, leaving teams in a difficult position to find replacements and ensuring a competitive tournament. This move is expected to enhance player commitment towards the franchises that invest in them.

The IPL governing council has made several updates for the 2025 season, including an increased retention limit, the return of the Right-to-Match (RTM) option, and a higher auction purse. Franchises are now allowed to retain up to six players each, with the RTM option reinstated, and the Impact Player rule remaining intact. The auction purse for the upcoming mega auction has been raised to Rs120 crore, which is a significant increase from the previous year.

The finalized retention rules will soon be shared with the ten franchises, with a mandate that at least one of the six retained players must be an uncapped Indian player. The remaining five players can be Indian or overseas players, and the retention can be done through direct retention, a mix of retention and RTM, or solely RTM options. This development has been well-received by the cricketing community, with former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan showing his approval of the new regulation.

Irfan Pathan has been vocal about the issue of players withdrawing from the IPL in the past two years and commended the BCCI for taking this decision. He believes that this new rule will strengthen the IPL in various ways and ensure the integrity of the tournament. Pathan’s statement highlights the growing importance of player commitment and the impact it has on the overall competitiveness and reliability of the IPL. This move is seen as a positive step towards maintaining the league’s standards and fostering a sense of loyalty among players and franchises.

Overall, the introduction of the two-year ban on players who declare their unavailability after being picked in the auction is a significant development in the IPL. This rule aims to address concerns about player withdrawals and create a more reliable and competitive tournament. With the updated retention rules for the 2025 season, franchises have more flexibility in retaining players, and the increased auction purse provides them with the resources to build strong teams. The positive reception from the cricketing fraternity, including former players like Irfan Pathan, reflects the importance of player commitment in shaping the future of the IPL. Ultimately, these changes are expected to enhance the quality of the tournament and maintain its status as one of the premier cricket leagues in the world.
