The recent Women’s T20 World Cup match between India and New Zealand in Dubai saw a controversial run-out decision that went against India, according to star player Jemimah Rodrigues. The Black Ferns went on to win the match by 58 runs, ending a 10-match losing streak. The controversy arose in the 14th over of the New Zealand innings when India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur ran out Amelia Kerr, only for the umpire to call it back as the ball was declared ‘dead’. This decision left India unhappy, but Kerr was eventually out in the next over.

Rodrigues expressed her frustration at the decision, stating that even though they respected the umpire’s decision, it felt harsh especially when Kerr herself accepted the run-out. New Zealand captain Sophie Devine added that while the decision may have stalled India’s momentum, it’s all part of the game with varying interpretations. India is set to face arch-rivals Pakistan next, while New Zealand will play against Australia in their upcoming matches.

In another match on the same day, South Africa secured a dominant 10-wicket victory over the West Indies. Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba played a crucial role in restricting the West Indies to 118-6 with impressive bowling figures of 4-29. In response, South Africa’s skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits led their team to victory by scoring 119-0 in 17.5 overs. Despite facing challenges from the West Indies bowlers, Wolvaardt and Brits reached their half-centuries in 45 balls each.

Wolvaardt described her innings as physically challenging due to the extreme heat in Dubai, while Brits ended her knock with six boundaries. Wolvaardt had two reprieves during her innings, surviving on five and 33 thanks to a dropped catch and an injury to the bowler. West Indies struggled with regular wicket-fall, with Marizanne Kapp and Mlaba destabilizing their batting lineup. Stafanie Taylor’s unbeaten 44 was not enough to steer the West Indies to a challenging total.

Despite the disappointing start, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews acknowledged the need to bounce back quickly in their upcoming match against Scotland. South Africa will face England next, and with their strong performance in the opening match, they are looking to continue their winning streak. The Women’s T20 World Cup is shaping up to be an exciting tournament with teams from around the world showcasing their skills and determination on the field.
