Protecting our eyes during the intense summer months is crucial, especially in regions like the UAE where the ultraviolet (UV) levels are rated as “extreme”. While many people focus on using sunscreen to protect their skin, not enough attention is given to eye health. The World Health Organisation reports that exposure to UV radiation can lead to cataracts, affecting millions worldwide. Dr. Mohammad Hesham Aly, Medical Director at Magrabi Eye Hospital, Dubai, stresses the importance of taking care of our vision during the summer season.

The summer months in the Middle East bring about several eye health concerns due to intense sunlight, high temperatures, and increased humidity. Dry Eye Syndrome is a common issue, with heat causing tears to evaporate quicker, leading to discomfort and redness. Corneal Damage is another risk, as UV radiation can cause conditions such as photokeratitis and pterygium. Working outdoors can also expose individuals to dust and pollutants, increasing the risk of chronic eye irritation and long-term damage.

UV exposure is linked to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Prolonged UV exposure can accelerate the ageing process of the eye, leading to damage to the macula. Individuals with light skin and those who work outdoors are at a higher risk of UV-related damage. Preventive measures such as regular eye exams, a healthy diet, smoking cessation, and wearing protective eyewear can help reduce the risk of AMD.

Protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays during summer is essential. Choosing sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, and using sunscreen around the eyes are crucial preventive measures. For individuals at risk of AMD, maintaining a healthy diet, quitting smoking, and managing underlying health conditions can help reduce the risk of vision loss. Additionally, wearing protective eyewear and practicing good hygiene with contact lenses can further safeguard eye health.

Regardless of age or activity level, it is important for everyone to prioritize their eye health. Staying hydrated, wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella for additional shade, using protective eyewear for outdoor work, and practicing good hygiene with contact lenses are key precautions to follow. By taking these simple steps, individuals can minimize the risk of eye health issues during the summer and beyond.Ensuring that we take care of our eyes during the summer months is crucial, especially in regions like the UAE where UV exposure is high. By following these preventive measures and being mindful of potential eye health risks, we can protect our vision and enjoy the summer season safely.
