Riyan Malhan, a student at Dubai Gem Private School, recently made history by becoming the first player from the UAE and West Asia to clinch a medal at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships in Chengdu, China. Despite losing a hard-fought semifinal to the eventual champion from China, Riyan settled for the bronze medal. This achievement is remarkable for a UAE player, especially in a tournament where he competed against tough opponents from countries like China and Indonesia. Riyan expressed his excitement over winning a medal at the Asian Junior Championships and his confidence in reaching the final, highlighting the tough competition he faced.

While Riyan’s immediate goal is to win the gold at the next edition of the Asian Junior Championships, his big dreams include competing in the 2026 Youth Olympics and the 2028 Summer Olympics. He aspires to qualify for the Olympics and win a medal for the UAE, representing the country on the world’s biggest stage. Riyan’s mother, Vasudha Malhan, shared her pride in her son’s accomplishments and highlighted his desire to represent the UAE in international events. She expressed gratitude for the support they have received in the country and the excellent infrastructure provided for athletes in Dubai.

Vipul, Riyan’s father, a former state-level shuttler in India, supported his son’s interest in badminton from a young age. Despite coming from families of academicians, both Riyan’s parents encouraged his passion for the sport. Riyan’s success, including a gold medal in an under-19 tournament in Bulgaria, has garnered the admiration of his grandparents, who now closely follow his matches and cheer for him. The family’s bond has grown stronger through Riyan’s badminton journey, with everyone coming together to support and celebrate his achievements.

Riyan’s dedication to badminton and his impressive performance at international tournaments have not only made his family proud but also paved the way for him to pursue his dreams of competing in prestigious events like the Olympics. With the unwavering support of his parents and the resources available in Dubai, Riyan continues to strive for excellence in the sport. His journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes in the region, showcasing the talent and potential that can emerge from the UAE’s sports scene. As Riyan sets his sights on future competitions and goals, his determination and passion for badminton are sure to lead him to even greater success on the international stage.
