A vibrant Qatar National Day celebration took place on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Lusail Boulevard, organized by the “Hour and Hour” program. The event, centered around the theme “Our Identity Lies in Our Heritage,” drew a large crowd and featured performances and activities designed to foster national pride and showcase Qatari culture. This annual observance commemorates the founding of the State of Qatar and its subsequent unification.

The celebration included a student military parade, poetry readings by Hamad Al Habouna, traditional Ardah dances, and Qatari vocal performances. A cultural competition hosted by Khalifa Al-Rumaihi, titled “Think and Answer,” tested attendees’ knowledge of local traditions, while a female student operetta, “Qatar’s Flowers,” written by Fada Al-Hil, provided an artistic highlight. The event underscored the importance of preserving Qatari heritage for future generations.

Understanding the Significance of Qatar National Day

Qatar National Day, officially observed on December 18th, commemorates the historic day in 1878 when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, and laid the foundations for a modern, independent state. The date symbolizes a pivotal moment in Qatar’s journey toward sovereignty and self-determination. The holiday promotes a sense of unity and patriotism among citizens and residents alike.

A Celebration of Culture and Identity

The “Hour and Hour” program’s event specifically focused on reinforcing national identity through cultural expression. According to Tamani Al Yafie, CEO of the program, the celebration was an opportunity to express belonging and pride in Qatar’s unique traditions. She emphasized the program’s role in recognizing and showcasing the talents of young Qataris.

The event’s diverse range of activities, from the solemn national anthem to the energetic Ardah performance, aimed to appeal to all segments of society. Children, in particular, were engaged through activities designed to instill a love for their homeland, organizers stated. Visitors also had the opportunity to experience various artistic events and engage with displays showcasing the nation’s history.

This year’s celebration was notable for its emphasis on youth participation. Al Yafie highlighted how the program provided a platform for students with skills in acting, recitation, and media presentation. This effort aligns with Qatar’s broader national vision of investing in its young population and empowering them to shape the country’s future.

The choice of “Our Identity Lies in Our Heritage” as the slogan for the event reflects a growing awareness within Qatar of the need to balance modernization with the preservation of traditional values. This theme is often incorporated into official national celebrations, recognizing the link between past and present. Qatar has been actively working to promote its cultural heritage internationally, as evidenced by its successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The “Hour and Hour” program aims to contribute to Qatar’s cultural landscape by providing educational and artistic opportunities. Their initiatives are frequently aligned with national priorities and events, according to their official website. They often collaborate with schools and local artists to bring these projects to fruition.

Looking ahead, organizers have not announced specific plans for Qatar National Day 2026. However, the scale and success of this year’s event suggest a continued commitment to robust national celebrations. Further details will likely be released by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in the months leading up to the next observance, and it is anticipated that maintaining a strong focus on cultural preservation will remain a key component of the festivities.
