Morocco advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations with a decisive 2-0 victory over Cameroon in Rabat on Friday. Goals from Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari propelled the host nation closer to a potential first continental title in 50 years, fueled by the fervent support of over 64,000 fans. This AFCON quarter-final win marks a significant step for Morocco, who are aiming to capitalize on their home advantage.

The match, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, saw Morocco dominate possession and create the clearer chances. Cameroon, despite a storied history in the tournament, struggled to mount a consistent attacking threat. Senegal also secured their place in the semi-finals, defeating Mali in a separate quarter-final match.

Morocco’s Path to the AFCON Semi-Finals

Brahim Diaz opened the scoring in the 26th minute, capitalizing on a corner delivered by Achraf Hakimi. The goal, initially credited as an own goal, was later attributed to Diaz after a review. This marked Diaz’s fifth goal in just five games at this year’s tournament, solidifying his position as a key player for Morocco.

Morocco continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded in the 74th minute when Ismael Saibari expertly controlled a delivery and fired the ball into the net. This second goal effectively sealed the victory, extinguishing any hopes of a late comeback from Cameroon.

Cameroon’s Tournament Run

Despite the defeat, Cameroon coach David Pagou expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly given the challenging circumstances leading up to the tournament. The Indomitable Lions had exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-finals, but ultimately lacked the firepower to overcome the determined Moroccan side. Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo was largely contained throughout the match.

However, Cameroon’s lack of attacking prowess proved to be their downfall. They struggled to create meaningful opportunities and were unable to test the Moroccan goalkeeper consistently. This contrasted sharply with Morocco’s clinical finishing and creative midfield play.

Pressure Mounts on Morocco to Deliver a Title

Morocco, currently ranked as the top nation in Africa and having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, entered the Africa Cup of Nations as strong favorites. The weight of expectation from their home supporters is immense, as they seek to end a 50-year drought since their last continental triumph.

Coach Walid Regragui acknowledged the historical significance of the win but urged caution, emphasizing the need to remain focused on each game as it comes. He stated that while the victory was “historic,” the team must “keep our feet on the ground” and strive for further success. The team is aware of the pressure, but seems determined to handle it.

This semi-final appearance is the first for Morocco since 2004, when they lost to Tunisia in the final. They previously hosted the AFCON in 1988, where they were defeated by Cameroon in the semi-finals, a result they were keen to avoid repeating. The team’s strong defensive record and attacking flair have made them a formidable opponent throughout the tournament.

Looking ahead, Morocco will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday. The outcome of that match will determine the magnitude of the challenge facing the host nation as they continue their pursuit of the AFCON title. The semi-final promises to be a tough test, and the team’s ability to handle the pressure and maintain their form will be crucial.

The next steps involve observing the Algeria-Nigeria match and preparing for a potentially challenging semi-final encounter. Uncertainty remains regarding the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, but Morocco will undoubtedly aim to leverage their home advantage and continue their impressive run in the tournament.
