The NBA draft saw history being made as France became the second country, alongside the United States, to have three players drafted in the top 10 picks. French fans stayed up into the early hours of Thursday morning to witness Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Tidjane Salaun being selected. The anticipation was whether Risacher or Sarr would be the No. 1 pick overall, following in the footsteps of last season’s Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama. Risacher was ultimately chosen by Atlanta, and Sarr went to Washington at No. 2.

Salaun joined the mix at No. 6 overall when Charlotte selected him, adding to the French presence in the draft. The New York Knicks further solidified France’s impact by drafting Pacome Dadiet as the 25th pick overall. Dadiet, a versatile defender and developing player, is set to make his mark in the league. The French players expressed their pride in representing their country and being part of a special moment for French basketball.

Washington’s decision to select Sarr marked the second consecutive year they picked a player from France, showcasing the growing talent pool in the country. With the 2024 Summer Olympics set to take place in France, the NBA draft success bodes well for their national team. Players like Rudy Gobert, the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, have paved the way for younger talents to dream big and excel on the global stage.

French basketball has seen a surge in popularity, thanks to role models like Tony Parker, Evan Fournier, and Nicolas Batum. Charlotte general manager Jeff Peterson noted the strong basketball culture in France that has produced top-tier talents. Tidjane Salaun emphasized that this is just the beginning for French players, with their impact being felt worldwide. The recognition and success of French players in the NBA underscore the country’s basketball prowess and potential for future growth.
