The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Investment Promotion in Oman recently organized the country’s first Oman e-commerce forum at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. The forum saw the participation of various officials and experts who discussed the efforts of Oman and other GCC countries in the field of e-commerce. Dr. Saleh bin Said Masan highlighted the importance of e-commerce in the global economy, emphasizing its role in economic growth, increasing access to global markets, stimulating innovation, and promoting cultural communication. He also mentioned how e-commerce aligns with Oman Vision 2040’s priorities and the national plan to empower the e-commerce system in Oman.

The forum underscored the significance of e-commerce as a key driver of economic growth and sustainable development. Azza Ibrahim Al Kindi presented the National e-commerce plan and its importance in facilitating e-commerce in Oman by addressing challenges and raising awareness among businesses and consumers. The plan consists of eight fundamental axes, including infrastructure, logistics, trade facilitation, skills development, and legal and regulatory frameworks. Al Kindi also highlighted the completion rate of initiatives under the national plan and the progress made towards enhancing e-commerce infrastructure and services in Oman.

Hassan bin Riyad Al-Kilani, from the Ministry of Economy in the UAE, provided insights into the legal framework for e-commerce between GCC countries. The forum featured discussions on the opportunities and challenges in the e-commerce sector, sharing best practices and successful experiences to strengthen regional cooperation and exchange expertise. Recommendations were made to improve the business environment and enhance the role of e-commerce in supporting economic growth and sustainable development.

The e-commerce market in the Sultanate of Oman was valued at $2.289 billion in 2023, with key sectors including electronics and media, food and personal care products, fashion, furniture and household appliances, and toys, hobbies, and handicrafts. The forum aimed to showcase the latest developments in e-commerce and promote regional collaboration to boost economic growth. Initiatives such as reducing fees on licenses, developing technical platforms, enhancing communication services, and implementing e-commerce regulations are underway to support the growth of e-commerce in Oman.

The e-commerce forum emphasized the rapid growth of the global e-commerce market, with sales reaching $5.8 trillion in 2023 and expected to grow further in the coming years. The increasing use of the internet and smartphones, as well as advancements in financial technology and online sales platforms, are driving this growth. The forum served as a platform to exchange knowledge and experiences in e-commerce, fostering collaboration among GCC countries to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the thriving e-commerce sector.

In conclusion, the Oman e-commerce forum provided a valuable opportunity for experts, officials, and stakeholders to discuss the potential of e-commerce in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and promoting regional cooperation. The forum highlighted the efforts of Oman and other GCC countries in enhancing the e-commerce ecosystem, with strategic initiatives and collaborations aimed at supporting the growth of this dynamic sector. By leveraging best practices and sharing experiences, the forum aims to strengthen the e-commerce landscape in the region and contribute to sustainable development and economic prosperity.
