Doha, Qatar – The HH The Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital for Rehabilitation and Prosthetics in Gaza has reopened its main facility in northern Gaza, resuming critical services for persons with disabilities and those injured in the ongoing conflict. Funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), the hospital had suspended operations in September 2025 due to Israeli military operations. The resumption of services addresses a significant gap in healthcare access for a vulnerable population.
The reopening, announced December 31, 2025, comes as the Gaza Strip faces a severe humanitarian crisis and a collapsing healthcare infrastructure. Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti, Chairman of the Hospital’s Board of Directors and Director General of QFFD, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to providing care despite the challenging circumstances. The move underscores Qatar’s ongoing support for the Palestinian people.
Restoring Critical Rehabilitation Services in Gaza
The hospital’s immediate priority is reactivating essential medical equipment, starting with the only CT scanner available in northern Gaza. This diagnostic tool is vital for assessing injuries and guiding treatment plans. Following this, the Prosthetics Department, Audiology and Balance Department, and Physical Rehabilitation Department will be fully operational.
Specialized outpatient clinics and inpatient rehabilitation services will focus on war-injured patients, as well as individuals suffering from neurological conditions, muscular disorders, strokes, and fractures. The hospital aims to improve the quality of life for beneficiaries through comprehensive and specialized care. According to QFFD, these services are crucial given the widespread trauma and long-term health needs resulting from the conflict.
Expanding Capacity with a New Southern Branch
Recognizing the escalating needs across the Gaza Strip, a new branch of the hospital has simultaneously opened in southern Gaza. This expansion is a direct response to the increased demand for healthcare services in the region, particularly as many residents have been displaced. The opening of the southern branch demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the evolving humanitarian situation.
The healthcare system in Gaza has been severely strained by the conflict and the ongoing blockade, leading to shortages of medical supplies, personnel, and infrastructure. The World Health Organization has repeatedly warned of the imminent collapse of the healthcare system, highlighting the urgent need for sustained international support. The QFFD hospital aims to provide a lifeline for those in need.
Since its establishment in April 2019, the hospital has served approximately 52,000 individuals with disabilities. In recent months, despite the challenging conditions, the hospital has continued to provide care, with around 100 patients receiving prosthetic limbs since March 2025 and nearly 9,000 benefiting from rehabilitation and audiology services. These figures demonstrate the hospital’s consistent contribution to the health and well-being of the Gazan population.
Additionally, the hospital’s work contributes to broader efforts to improve healthcare access and quality in Gaza. The QFFD has been a long-standing supporter of Palestinian development projects, focusing on areas such as education, health, and infrastructure. This latest initiative reinforces Qatar’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Looking ahead, the hospital will continue to monitor the evolving situation in Gaza and adapt its services accordingly. The ongoing conflict and political instability present significant challenges to sustained operations. Future plans include expanding the range of specialized services offered and increasing the hospital’s capacity to meet the growing demand for healthcare. The long-term viability of the hospital will depend on continued funding and a resolution to the underlying conflict.
