Doha, Qatar – Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, a prominent advocate for global education and the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation and Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, convened with Signe Zeikate, First Lady of the Republic of Costa Rica, on Monday. The meeting, held alongside the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), focused on enhanced collaboration in educational development and support. Discussions centered on leveraging innovation to improve education systems and exploring specific partnerships between EAA and Costa Rica to safeguard learning opportunities, particularly for vulnerable youth.

The encounter took place on the sidelines of WISE, a biennial event attracting policymakers, educators, and innovators from around the globe to discuss solutions to pressing educational challenges. Costa Rica’s attendance signals the nation’s increasing focus on leveraging international partnerships to enhance its educational outcomes and address disparities. This meeting occurs as both Qatar and Costa Rica continue to prioritize social development through investment in human capital.

Qatar Foundation and EAA Explore Collaborative Education Initiatives with Costa Rica

The discussions between Sheikha Moza and First Lady Zeikate underscored the shared belief that innovation is pivotal to crafting effective and equitable education systems. Both leaders recognized adapting to the evolving needs of students and utilizing technology as crucial components of future educational strategies. The EAA Foundation has been increasingly focusing on reaching marginalized children in areas affected by conflict and disaster, aligning with Costa Rica’s own efforts to ensure inclusive education.

Focus on Safeguarding Education in Challenging Environments

A key theme of the talks was the importance of protecting education during times of crisis, including conflicts and natural disasters. According to the EAA, millions of children worldwide face interruptions to their learning due to instability and displacement. The exchange likely covered strategies to ensure continuity of learning and address the unique challenges faced by students in vulnerable situations.

Costa Rica has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to social welfare, including prioritizing access to quality education for all citizens. However, like many nations, it grapples with challenges in rural and underserved areas. Collaboration with the EAA, which has expertise in developing and implementing programs in complex environments, could provide valuable support to address these existing inequalities.

Empowering Youth Through Skill Development

Beyond access, talks also addressed the need to equip young people with the skills necessary to thrive in the 21st-century workforce. The conversation undoubtedly touched upon the significance of vocational training and ensuring educational curricula are aligned with the demands of the modern economy. This aligns with Qatar’s focus on diversifying its economy and fostering a knowledge-based society.

The EAA Foundation’s “All Out of School” initiative, which aims to accelerate access to quality education for children and youth affected by crisis, could potentially offer a framework for joint programming. Furthermore, Costa Rica’s established commitment to environmental sustainability and social inclusion could inform the development of innovative education programs.

While specific details of potential joint projects remain undisclosed, the meeting signifies a deepening of relations between Qatar and Costa Rica. Both countries are active participants in international forums promoting sustainable development goals, including Goal 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Following the meeting, both sides expressed optimism about future collaboration. The next steps are expected to involve the formation of a joint working group to explore concrete areas of cooperation and develop a detailed action plan. The timeline for this process remains uncertain, and ongoing geopolitical factors could impact the implementation of any subsequent agreements. Observers will watch for any formal announcements regarding specific projects and funding commitments in the coming months.

Qatar Foundation’s role in facilitating these international collaborations continues to grow, demonstrating its commitment to global educational advancement.

Education Above All (EAA) Foundation’s work in ensuring access to education for vulnerable populations is also expected to be a central focus of any future partnership with Costa Rica.

The country’s progress in Costa Rica’s education system will be a key indicator of the partnership’s success.
