At least 18 people, including three children and two leading officers in the Hamas-run police force, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Thursday. These strikes hit a tent in a humanitarian zone called Muwasi, near Khan Younis, and a separate airstrike in central Gaza. The casualties included women and men, with others injured in the attacks.

Among the casualties were Hamas police chief Mahmoud Salah and his deputy Hassam Shahwan, who were killed while carrying out their duties. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that they had targeted Shahwan, accusing him of helping Hamas plan attacks on Israeli forces. The airstrikes targeted members of committees that help secure aid convoys, adding to the death toll in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis. Israeli offensive actions have resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, with a significant number of women and children among the casualties. Local health officials in Gaza report that at least 45,000 Palestinians have been killed, with a significant portion being civilians.

The high number of civilian casualties in the conflict has raised concerns about the impact on Gaza’s population, with over 90% of its 2.3 million people being displaced. The conflict has led to devastating damage in Gaza, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. The ongoing violence and loss of life highlight the urgent need for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas to prevent further casualties and suffering among the civilian population.

The failure to reach a ceasefire agreement has prolonged the conflict, with little progress made on resolving the underlying issues fueling the violence. The airstrikes in Gaza have targeted both militants and civilians, with the IDF claiming that it only targets militants. However, local health officials dispute this claim, stating that a significant number of civilian deaths have occurred as a result of the strikes.

As the conflict continues, the international community must step up efforts to bring an end to the violence and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The loss of innocent lives, including children and women, underscores the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Both Israel and Hamas must prioritize the protection of civilians and work towards a lasting ceasefire to prevent further bloodshed and suffering.
